1960's HOLIDAY MAGIC Eyeliner Pots
I have to admit that when I purchased this lot of 1960's Holiday Magic Eyeliner Pots I had no idea of the history! I had NEVER heard of this brand before and boy was I in for a surprise!
Thanks to the amazing resource, The Makeup Museum, I was able to read into the shady and surprising history behind this obscure brand.
Just to give a brief description, Holiday Magic was created in 1964 by California salesman William Patrick. The idea came about when he saw his neighbor selling her fruit-based cosmetics by the name of, "Zolene", which he soon started selling under the new name "Holiday Magic".
Patrick started selling Holiday Magic as a MLM very similar to Mary Kay and Avon, which were popular at the time.
Eventually, the creators of Zolene found out about the shady practices of Holiday Magic and pulled their product.
What shady practices? In 1967, it was estimated that over 55% of their products never ended up reaching the customers, which led to the FTC getting involved. By 1974 the company went bankrupt and defunct as a brand.
To really dive into the meat of the history behind this brand I highly suggest reading the post that The Makeup Museum did where they beautifully explain the company's sordid history and also the deeper, problematic details behind it. You can read it for yourself HERE!
